STIFF is over... Stay Tuned for Highlights!

As most people have noticed, the Blog-o-STIFF has been a ghost town for the last couple weeks. I had every intention of keeping it up to date as we went along, but everyday there were too many things happening to write about, so I started snapping pictures where I could as placeholders to jog my memory when I would have more time to write. We had the volunteer BBQ on Saturday and I think I have mellowed out enough to start mailing things to filmmakers, tiding up the website and expanding on these pictures. STIFF is sort of becoming a year round thing for many of us though, so I imagine that I might take some time over the course of the rest of the summer rather than plowing through all of these entries in the next couple weeks. There is a lot to cover ranging from the award winners, press that continues to roll in, new friends who visited Seattle, and strange happenings at this year’s fest. I also want to spend some time writing about a couple of the coolest days that have happened in recent memory. Please be patient with me.

FREE SCREENINGS TONIGHT! Holler Back and Uncounted

Holler Back, originally uploaded by Clint Berquist.

Tonight at the Capitol Hill Arts Center. Register to vote or bring somebody who does and get into these two feature films for free!

Hollerback is an excellent portrait of why some Americans choose not to vot, while Uncounted is an infuriating account of how voting machines can currently be manipulated. They are both MUST SEES!

I <3 the Lusty Lady

I spoke with KEXP Comedy Bloger Corbett Cummings the other night and he told me that he had this image in his head about the person who puts the marquee up at the Lusty Lady as a lonely comedian who he would love to see get some stage time. In past years, the LL has been kind enough to give STIFF a shout out on their marquee, but this one is by far my favorite. With Moby playing across the street at the Showbox on Sunday night as part of STIFF, it couldn't have been any better. Thanks!

Handicapping the Weekend Film Challenge - Team Ramrod

Team Ramrod
Team Leader: Joe Sexton
Genre: Horror
Odds: Not Applicable

Previous coordinator Chris McBride hasn’t gone anywhere, but he now has a toddler and another on the way and wasn’t sure he could dedicate the time necessary to pull it off. So, last year’s B-movie team captain, Joe Sexton has stepped in as the new WFC coordinator and he has been doing a bang up job. I met Joe during STIFF 2006 when his film Coup Poudre screened. Joe said he wanted to be involved, kept after me and now is an integral part of the team. Joe really likes horror and he mentioned that he was heading to some remote cabin with a bunch of people to shoot, so it sounds like he found a really authentic location. There is no doubt that Joe will be able to put together a quality, horror movie that audiences will enjoy, but while none of us see any ethical problems with making a WFC movie, it just wouldn’t be right to actually have a member of the team compete. Team Ramrod will be the last film to screen and now that you have a little more background on the teams, I hope you are as excited to see the finished films as I am.

The first screening kicks off TONIGHT at the Rendezvous' @ 6:15PM (Be sure to stick around afterward for RFK!). The other screenings are at Central Cinema on Wednesday June 11th @ 7PM and again at the Rendezvous on Saturday, June 14th at 1:30PM. The Awards Ceremony hosted by comedian Emmett Montgomery happens on Saturday the 14th @ 6:15PM. Please come check these movies out and vote for your favorites!

RFK with Robert Blair Kaiser

Jewel Box Feature Presentation:
8 p.m.

Rfk Most

Outstanding Documentary: RFK

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: A detailed study of the 1968 assassination of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the 40-year battle of RFK's close friend (and shooting victim) Paul Schrade to have the case re-opened. The film uncovers for the first time shocking details of perjury in the official investigation, and also makes public for the first time the secret tape recordings of the hypnosis sessions of accused assasin Sirhan Sirhan.
Author Robert Blair Kaiser will be at the Festival to represent the film and participate in a Q&A.  He was the investigative reporeter who spent 6 months with Sirhan Sirhan before, during and after the trial, and is the absolute authority on the RFK Assassination.  You can buy a signed copy of his book.  This one should not be missed.
