I'm thinking of evolving this blog in to a diary chronicling the rapid deterioration of my liver and overall health as a result of exhaustion fueled by irresponsible quantities of alcoholic beverages.
Day 2:
Saigon, shit. I'm still only in
Saigon. Every time I think I'm going to wake up back in the jungle. When I was home after my
first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing... I hardly said a word to my wife
until I said yes to a divorce. When I was here I wanted to be there. When I was
there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle. I've been here a
week now. Waiting for a mission, getting softer. Every minute I stay in this
room I get weaker. And every minute Charlie squats in the bush he gets
stronger. Each time I look around the walls move in a little tighter. Everyone gets everything he wants. I
wanted a mission, and for my sins they gave me one. Brought it up to me like room service.
...you know, something like that only less wordy. It's a work in progress
Last night at The Rendezvous kicked all kinds of ass and you probably missed it. Giggle Specialist, Lizzy Pilcher took the stage around 10:30pm and hilarity ensued. She even managed to get some dude to buy her a beer and deliver it to her on stage during her act. It was a Bud Light though, so I really don't see that relationship going anywhere.
The first band of the night, Sealth, took the stage around 11:00pm. Let me just say that the set this band put together embodied what I wish every band could do at STIFF. This being a film festival and all, we encourage the artists to bring their favorite movie to play along behind them on the big screen during their set. Dace Anderson, Arielle Marie, Jerrud Glaze, Mitchell Fund and their crew clearly put a lot of work in to a wildly entertaining movie of their own that really kept me captivated. Their music was complex yet catchy, polished yet raw and scored the film perfectly. The whole thing came together like some sort of rock opera. What more could we ask for? I'll tell you what...how about a cover of Motorhead's Ace of Spades sung by Arielle? Chicks singing Motorhead = awesomeness. It was so good, we've even asked the band to do it again so we can get it on film, if they'll let us. I think it would be a great representation of what we strive for with STIFF Licks.
Sealth was a tough act to follow, but the next band, Stonebender, brought the fucking house down! My first impression of their tiny front-woman, Nollie DeVol was how polite and sweet she is. Well that all changed when she took the stage. For the next 45 minutes, she and her band of bad asses (Johnny DeVol, Dan Hulford, Paul Higgins) proceeded to remind me why I love down and dirty rock and roll so much. They even had Black Dynamite playing behind them. Brilliant. I'd like to share a Stonebender haiku with you:
Leather cowboy hats
That riff makes me want to cry
I must break something
Ok, I suck at haiku's, but you'd get it if you were there. -Zakk
